Used Car Review: Toyota 4Runner SR5

By: StaffSeptember 6, 20212 min

Designed on the frame of a heavy-duty pickup truck, the SR5 is capable of handling a heavy-duty workload. But don’t let this car’s brawn fool you. With a roomy interior and full complement of high-tech features, this SUV will serve double duty as both family car and everyday work truck.

Since bursting on the scene more than a quarter of a century ago, the Toyota 4Runner SR5 has built a reputation for quality, durability and reliability. With its top of the line design, innovative, features and superior drivability, this midsize SUV continues to be a top choice on both the new and used market. Better yet, with the type of reliability car buyers have come to expect from the Toyota name, you can rest assured knowing that this is one vehicle that won’t let you down:

  • Heavy-Duty: Designed on the frame of a heavy-duty pickup truck, the 4Runner SR5 enjoys an established reputation for being a heavy-duty work vehicle.
  • Versatility: Due to its rugged design, solid axle and roomy interior, this midsize SUV is versatile enough for use both on and off the road.   With some models offering an optional third row of seats, the 4Runner includes enough seating and cargo space for the growing family
  • Reliability: With a history dating back to 1984, the 4Runner enjoys a continued reputation for reliability and durability.

The first Toyota 4Runner SR5s were introduced to the car buying world way back in 1985, and while a lot has changed since those early beginnings, one thing remains a constant: The SR5 continues to be the vehicle in which all other mid-size SUVs are compared.

  • 2010: Now in its fifth generation, the SR5 comes with a host of optional and standard features – including but not limited to, alloy wheels, skid plates, fog lights, air-conditioning, cruise control, full power accessories, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and MP3 audio system.
  • 2005: As an answer to the previous generation’s lack of power, the 2005 4Runner SR5 featured a 4.0-liter V6 240 horsepower engine. Other options included a third row of seats and an upgrade to a V8 engine.
  • 1997: This third generation SR5 has held its value surprisingly well. And since these vehicles were ahead of their time in terms of styling and comfort features, you can rest assured knowing you are receiving a quality car at a great price.

Depending on what you are looking for, the Toyota 4Runner SR5 may be right for you. While the SUV may not have scored high marks from Consumer Reports in terms of exterior styling and interior leg-room, the heavy-duty SUV continues to receive quality scores for its safety features and reputation for continued reliability. The following reviews are for the 2011 model year.

  • Consumer Reports Test Score: 55/100
  • JD Power and Associates Predicted Reliability Score: 4/5
  • NHTSA: Rollover Crash Rating: 3/5
