Gas prices have a funny way of making you pay attention to numbers you once ignored. And MPG is probably the most ignored of them all. 

That badge on the window can mean hundreds of dollars difference at the pump every year, but most buyers glance at it and move on without really knowing what they are looking at. 

How to Track Down the MPG 

The good news is that finding it does not take much digging. When you are at a dealership, the MPG is usually staring right at you. New cars and many used cars have it listed right on the window sticker, broken into three numbers: 

  • City MPG: How the car performs in stop-and-go traffic: think daily commutes and school runs. 

  • Highway MPG: Open road driving at steady speeds. 

  • Combined MPG: The average of both, and the most honest number to compare two cars side by side. 

If you are looking at a used car and the sticker is long gone, finding the number is still pretty straightforward. The EPA is required by law to publish certified fuel economy ratings for every vehicle, so the data is always out there. A quick search on the government's free MPG lookup tool with the make, model and year will get you there in under a minute.  

The only exception is heavy duty vehicles over 8,500 pounds, which are not required to carry a rating. For everything else, the number exists and is easy to find 

Why the Number Isn't the Whole Truth 

You found the number. Great. Now do not make the mistake of taking it literally. The EPA runs its tests in a lab with no passengers, no cargo, no air conditioning and no real traffic. The car is in top shape and driven at steady, controlled speeds. 

Your daily life looks nothing like that. 

Between the AC running on a hot day, a trunk full of groceries and stop-and-go traffic, your real world MPG will almost always come in lower than what the sticker says. For a used car that gap can be even wider, because wear and tear and older parts chip away at fuel efficiency over time. 

Treat the EPA number as a starting point for comparison, not a promise. It is most useful when sizing up two similar cars against each other. 

What's Behind Your MPG 

The EPA number is one piece of the puzzle. The rest comes down to the car itself. A few things worth looking at before you commit: 

  • Transmission type: Manual transmissions often get better fuel economy than automatics. Not always a dealbreaker, but worth knowing. 

  • Engine size: A bigger engine generally means more power and more fuel burned. A 1.2-liter engine will typically outperform a 1.5-liter on efficiency, even if they look similar on paper. 

  • Fuel type: Clean diesel engines tend to get better mileage than their gasoline counterparts, and many newer models offer that option. 

These factors alone don’t tell the whole story, but together they give you a much clearer picture of what you are actually getting into, especially on a used car. 

How to Calculate Your Own MPG 

If you want to know what a used car really gets in real life, you can figure it out yourself in a few simple steps. 

Fill the tank all the way up and reset the trip odometer to zero. Drive normally for a week or until the tank is nearly empty. Fill it up again and note how many gallons it took. Then divide the miles driven by the gallons used. 

Say you drove 300 miles and it took 10 gallons to refill. That is 30 MPG. 

Do this a couple of times to get a reliable average, since one tank can be thrown off by a long highway trip or a week stuck in city traffic.

Small Habits That Make a Real Difference 

The car you pick matters, but so does how you use it. A few tweaks to your driving routine can stretch every gallon further than you might expect. 

  • Accelerate gently: Every hard start burns more fuel than a smooth one. City driving especially. 

  • Check your tire pressure regularly: Underinflated tires make the engine work harder than it needs to. 

  • Ditch the extra weight: That stuff sitting in your trunk all week is quietly costing you at the pump. 

  • Use AC wisely: It is there for a reason, but running it on full blast on a mild day adds up. 

  • Stay on top of basic maintenance: Old spark plugs, clogged air filters and dirty oil all take a quiet toll on fuel efficiency. 

None of it is hard, and your gas bill will show it.
