Used Toyota Avalon Review

By: StaffPublished September 6, 2021

While the Avalon may not boast the exterior styling refinement of a more expensive luxury sedan, its roomy interior and powerful engine help this surprisingly powerful full-size car stand ahead of many of its market competitors.

If you are searching for a comfortably designed car with a full-sized, roomy interior, you will be pleased when you take the Toyota Avalon for a test drive. With above average safety features and great fuel efficiency, this full-size sedan is perfect for just about any growing family. Add in its any number of high-tech, luxury car features, and a used Avalon offers the added appeal of luxury, but with an affordable price tag.

Advantages of a Used Toyota Avalon

Most notably what the Toyota Avalon offers is driving refinement. While it does bear some similarities to the ever popular Camry – of course, it is a lot bigger - this full-size sedan comes equipped with enough high-tech and luxury features to satisfy the car buyer looking for luxury without breaking their bank account. This is especially true for any Avalon manufactured after 2005 when features such as a sunroof, leather upholstery, a reclining rear seat, rearview camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth and a nine-speaker stereo were offered with the base model.

  • Roomy and Comfortable: Large and spacious, later model Avalons come equipped with a host of upscale driving features as well as a limo-like rear seat.
  • Quiet ride: With a smooth and quiet ride, the Avalon offers driving refinement comparable to more expensive, luxury sedans.
  • Plenty of punch: A V6 engine adds the appeal of driving excitement.

Notable Used Toyota Avalon Generations

The Toyota Avalon includes a history dating back to 1995, and since then the mid-size sedan continues to receive high praise from both car buyers and car critics. While early models did lack a bit of exterior flash and interior refinement, this all changed in 2005, when Toyota began adding a number of upscale driving features to both the base and luxury trim models.

  • 2005: In 2005, in response to critiques about its lack of style, Toyota completely overhauled the Avalon. While the car is still quiet and big inside, this four-door sedan has an updated interior and a redesigned front and rear end, accounting for a more distinct look.
  • 2000: The Avalon saw an increase in size to its interior space during the second generation. The engine size was also increased to 3.0-liter, and a number of advanced safety features, such as stability control and brake assist, were added as options.
  • 1995: The first generation Avalon was designed as a more fuel efficient option to other similar full-size sedans on the market.

The Toyota Avalon has continually received high praise from critics. It is, however, important to note that it was not until 2005 that the sedan became a recognized leader in terms of upscale driving features.  Since then, the car most notably stands out in terms of safety, reliability, refinement and driving experience.  The following reviews are for the 2011 model year.

  • Consumer Reports Test Score: 86/100
  • JD Power and Associate Predicted Reliability Score: 4/5
  • NHTSA Rollover Crash Rating: 4/5
