The first Volkswagen vehicle (that we now refer to as the Beetle) was actually created by Ferdinand Porsche at the request of Adolph Hitler. WWII delayed production of the beetle-shaped sedan, and the factory where it was supposed to be produced was ultimately taken over by the British Army. They renamed the company Volkswagen. By the end of the 1940s mass production of the Volkswagen Beetle had begun, and the United States received its first models in 1949.
The Volkswagen brand grew steadily from the 1950s-1980s, producing many new vehicles such as the Passat, Golf/Rabbit GTI, and the Scirocco sport coupe. The 90s saw a bit of a stumble, but the launch of the New Beetle repositioned Volkswagen as a consumer favorite. In the new millennium the brand launched itself into the luxury vehicle market, and its current lineup of vehicles includes a variety of family-oriented sedans and roomy SUVs.
